After the success of the California and California T, Ferrari was looking for a new car to keep the success high up. Both the California and California T were known as woman's Ferrari's. Ferrari had to change the Portofino to get it looking as a real men's Ferrari.
The originally designed coupe was transformed into a spider. But not only the design of the Portofino changed. Ferrari put a 600bhp Turbocharged V8 in the nose of their newest 'cheap' car. The extra 40bhp compared to the California T makes this Portofino a more agressive car. I really love the look of the new Portofino, with and without roof on.

BBR also makes the car in scale 1:43 for collectors of smaller modelcars.

We will start off with a little unboxing, there are no pictures included since it's not that exciting. As standard all BBR Ferrari models come in a red 2-piece cardboard box. Lifting off the top you're greeted by a grey cloth protecting the UV proof acrylic display case from dust. Once that has been taken off the model can be seen in its full glory.
As with all BBR models this model is also placed on a nice leather base plate. In fact it's just a wooden plate wrapped in nice leather. On the left front of the base we can see an embossed BBR Models logo. Following on to the middle of the base we see the Portofino script finished in stainless steel. Al the way at the bottom right of the base we can see the Ferrari emblem. And to finish off the plate look around we have the limitation plaque at the back or the plate. Mine is number 32 out of the 39 models being made in this spec.

Let's start the reveiw on the front of the model, but first I must give compliment on the paint, perfect!
To take a better look at the model I took off the display cover, but once you do that it makes you so happy. You're greeted by the smell of leather in combination with paint and glue, and damn that makes you feel a lot better.
So let's start with the front. The proportions are perfect, the prancing horse has been metal etched and all the grills on the car are perforated as to be excpected on a model at this price point. Although that doesn't happen with all brands.... MR Collection....
The front big grill is fully open but behind it is just a black plastic part..
A great add to the realism of the model are the replicated front parking sensors and front facing camera, both part made out of a thin good looking plastic material. The other sensors are nicely engraved into the body.
Moving over to the lights, perfect as always on BBR, the DRL's have been replicated perfectly aswell as the big light itself, all that beauty is to see behind a thin plastic light cover. Some say that the ruined the lights cause of the gap on the left side, but that is an air intake so nothing wrong there.
Not to forget we must mention the perfect carbon fibre pattern on the front bumper, BBR is still the brand doing that the best. They always put a clear coat over the carbon, which makes it look that bit better.
On top of the hood we can see a perforated grill, perfect. The windscreen wipers are replicated perfectly, but because they are so thin we see a little glue residue, not noticable when you look at it, but I thought it would be good to mention it.

'I have never seen such a beautiful paintjob on a model car before, well done BBR!'
Moving over to the 20'' Silver forged Nurburgring wheels.
As on all BBR Models the wheels are perfect, feauturing real metal lug nuts, a prancing horse in the middle and real metal brake discs. The brakes discs feature perfectly sized cooling holes. This model has the yellow painet brake discs, featuring a ''Ferrari carbon ceramic'' decal. To the right of the wheel we see a carbon fibre air oulet, again done perfect. Under there we can see a metal etched side indicator, this is what a good indicator looks like and not a cheap orange circle like on Bburago models. And not to miss on this car are the Scuderia shields the are not just a flat decal but a real thick emblem. On the drivers door we can find the metal etched key hole under the door handle, both perfect. The mirrors is shaped the right way and has a good mirror function. We can already take a little peek at the best of the model here.......

Again at the back we have the beautiful carbon fibre work next to the lights.
Not just the grills above the exhausts are perforated, but also the grills around the exhaust parts are. Both rear emblems are metal etched, and the model has a clear plastic third brake light. This already looks beautiful, but can it be better? |
Yes it can get better, look at the interior!
The interior is a crema with nero combination, and it really suits this spec. This is the best interior on a model imo. Every button has details, it has a metal Ferrari and Portofino script. Detailed decals replicating the SATNAV and passenger display. The seats have perforated stitching which is a lot better then using a decal for it. You know what, I'll stop talking and let you enjoy pictures of the interior. |
So is this model worth it? Definitely, nothing about this model is bad, paint is perfect, interior is beautiful.
You don't want to spend this much on a 1:18 Portofino?
The Looksmart model is better for you, offcourse that is still not cheap at around €230,- but it's the cheapest out there. It does have less detail but it's all up to you..
Now we'll move on to the final rating, and it's not a 10 cause no model is that perfect....
